For many this is the day they thought they would never see. You might have very mixed emotions. For so long you looked at family and friends start the next chapter of their life and wished it were you. Now it is you, and you don’t know how you are going to fill your days. Maybe work consumed every minute of the last 40 years and you never had time for a hobby. Maybe a loved one is gone and the house feels lonely as you no longer have the interaction with colleagues that work gave you every day. You might be thinking ‘what will I do to fill my days?” or “how do I even want to fill my days?”
This is a real dilemma for some retired people. There is suddenly a gap in their lives and they have no idea how they are going to fill it. What is more frustrating is they knew it was coming yet it suddenly has just snuck up on them and they aren’t prepared.
I love working with clients in this space. To see people get the ‘ah’ moment when they begin to understand what it is they really value and what it is they want to do next in their lives.
Coaching in this space is really fun. Clients find it so rewarding. As one of my first newly retired clients told me “ Paula, I was secretly devastated when I had to retire. I didn’t know what to do with myself and how I was going to fill my days. I knew I was getting under my wife’s feet and it was a real struggle for both of us having to adjust to being together so much. There were lots of silences. But when I came to you for coaching, I started to see my retirement through a different set of eyes. I let go the feelings that I had that I wasn’t any use to anyone and started to do the things I always wanted to do. I had forgotten as a child I loved to paint. You gave me the confidence to go and try it. Not only now do I enjoy my weekly classes but I met a new group of friends and have a whole new social scene to enjoy. I feel as if my life is only starting over.”
